Riddles in Your Brain

Growing up with an obsolete computer, “games” were almost synonymous with point-and-click adventure games from the 80s and 90s. However, the limitations of the technology and medium are too apparent when they are played today. I wanted to make an adventure game that highlighted these tropes, while subverting them and conveying an engrossing narrative.

Narrative Influences

Narrative Influences

This game was conceived through a host of cinematic and ludic influences. I was inspired by the horror of a failing marriage in Żuławski’s Possession and the melancholic beauty of Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love, as well as the agnosticism and unreliable narrator in Silent Hill 2. My intention was to combine the elements I loved from these narratives through the lens of my own cultural and personal experiences.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes

I created 46 Memory Lane with Adventure Game Studio (AGS), a niche IDE which still has a small but active community. This software is specially geared towards making adventure games in the vein of Day of the Tentacle or Beneath a Steel Sky, and uses a derivative of C+ as a basis of the language.

Although it is a horror game, there are no jump scares. Instead, I wanted to build a slow sense of unease into the player. If this plus pixel art is up your alley, give it a try! You can find it at: https://shamz.itch.io/46-memory-lane
