Transplanting Cultures

Transplanting Cultures

In many ways, this music video was the byproduct of the crew’s shared experience in Germany. Most of us were from CityU Hong Kong on a joint degree program at Leuphana, and YUWEN produced the track during this two-year period. Here cinematographer Asgard Wong can be seen adjusting the lighting setup while I give YUWEN directions between takes.

Design

Design

The design of this project lived through several iterations, but the intention from the beginning was to create a slightly surreal atmosphere with the costume, colors, and set design. The character of the Boy, the protagonist of the film, was inspired by feelings of identity loss and unbelonging.

Communication Barriers

Communication Barriers

This entire film was shot guerilla-fashion. For the train scenes, the cast and crew hopped on U-Bahns around Hamburg, in hopes of finding an empty line. In the picture we encountered an obstacle: we didn’t think of a way to communicate between train cars during the shoot. So we put our phones on loudspeaker, much to the embarrassment of the German members of our crew.
